NEW YORKER JUMPS INTO FIRST PLACE IN RACE FOR $25,000 AT NATIONAL SCRABBLE® CHAMPIONSHIP
SAN DIEGO, CA -- Former World Champion Joel Sherman of the Bronx, NY, a 40 year-old professional SCRABBLE® player, has spelled his way into the lead after 21 rounds at the National SCRABBLE® Championship (NSC). Wielding words like TAENIAS (a headband worn in ancient Greece) and IXORA (a flowering plant), 700 SCRABBLE® players from 40 states and 8 countries are competing at the largest NSC in history for a total prize package of nearly $90,000. After 10 more rounds, one expert will win the $25,000 first prize and bragging rights among North America's 10,000 SCRABBLE® enthusiasts.
Sherman, with a record of 18-3 and +1691 point spread, is trailed by 35 year-old Nigel Richards of Malaysia (16-5, +1276) and Marlon Hill, 37, of Baltimore, MD, in third (16-5, +844).
Other unusual words played today include: JORUM (a large drinking bowl), QAT (an evergreen shrub) and AZOTED (nitrogen adj.).
NSC competition continues with 7 rounds Wednesday and the final three games Thursday morning, August 22. The $25,000 check will be awarded to the new champion at approximately 12 noon Thursday. Live Internet coverage is featured on www.scrabbleassociation.com.
