Boston, MA — On April 24th, over 200 5-8-grade students from 20 states as far away as Washington, Florida and California descended upon Boston for their chance at the top prize of $5,000 and National School SCRABBLE® Title at the second annual National School SCRABBLE® Championship (NSSC). After the vowels vanished and the last consonant consumed, one two-student team managed to outscore the rest of the best school players in the nation and took home the national title.
The winning team of 14 year old Eric Johnston and 13 year old teammate Thomas Bao from Terman Middle School in Palo Alto, CA, won the Second Annual National School SCRABBLE® Championship, ending the tournament with a perfect 6-0 record and a +734 point spread and earning $5,000 in prize money. In addition to winning the event, the winning team will have a chance to test their skills against adults at the $100,000 National SCRABBLE® Championship, July 31 - August 5 in New Orleans.
"It was well worth the trip," says Terry Johnston, mother of winning team member Eric. "This is a great tribute to their English teacher Jean Center, who has been a huge supporter of this program."
Second place and $2,000 went to Andre and Miles Ornish of Warren Walker School in La Mesa, CA. The brother team had a 5-1 +986 record and was 276 points better than 3rd place finishers Katie Devanney and Katie Donley from the Academy of Notre Dame in Vaillanova, PA, who finished the championship with a 5-1 +710 record, for which they garnered $1,000 in prize money.
According to John D. Williams Jr., NSA Executive Director, this tournament showcases how enthusiastic both teachers and students are about SCRABBLE® "Kids love to play the game and teachers embrace the use of it in the classroom because of its unique approach to learning."
